The History of Campaign & Political Buttons
Fact: Promotional, campaign and advertising buttons and badges date back as far as 1896? At that time of era the buttons and badges were little more than bits of protected paper stuck to metal disks. In 1896 it was not the quality of the button, but the fact that they served in getting the important campaign message out and across to the public!
Campaign Buttons were first used in the 1896 presidential campaign between William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan.
Political Buttons originated with George Washington. At his inauguration, Washington and his supporters wore a brass-clothing button that said "G.W.-Long Live the President."
When the ferrotype and tintype buttons were invented, pictures could be used. A metal frame surrounded these buttons and a hole was punched into the top of the button so a ribbon could be attached. These were also worn on lapels.
For the past 100 years, slogans, pictures, and names have been placed on campaign buttons or political buttons and used at rallies and political events. Many colorful designs were created during the golden age (1896 - 1916) of campaign buttons.
